The Reuse Playbook

We recently spent time reading The Reuse Playbook by @arupgroup. It’s an excellent example of guidance that goes beyond aspiration and focuses on delivery. The publication provides a clear roadmap for integrating material reuse into real projects, identifying who needs to take action, when, and why.

Several themes stood out. The idea of moving towards a more resource-led design process challenges the traditional approach of designing first and sourcing materials later. Equally important is the recognition that future reuse depends on the decisions we make today, from designing for maintenance and adaptation through to ensuring components can be accessed, disassembled and reused in the future.

The publication also highlights the growing importance of material passports and robust building information. If we want buildings to become material banks rather than waste streams, we need better ways of recording, managing and passing on knowledge about the materials and systems they contain.

For our work at MAC+RAO, these ideas reinforce many of the principles that underpin low-carbon design, retrofit and long-life buildings. For the wider industry, the playbook offers something equally valuable: a practical route from circular economy ambitions to actions that can be embedded within real projects today.
